Commissioning is one of the most critical phases of any construction project, and yet it remains one of the least supported.

Across the industry, engineers and managers are regularly placed in charge of the commissioning process with little formal training, limited reference material, and no one to ask for help. The expectation is that they will figure it out. Many do. But the cost – in time, quality, and confidence – is significant, and it is a cost that is added to every project they touch.

We are building commissioningmanager.com to change that.

Our focus will be the commissioning process itself: the planning, documentation, and management that forms the backbone of every successful project delivery. We are aiming to build a single, reliable resource where engineers, managers, and construction professionals can find clear, practical, and accurate information – the kind of resource we wished had existed when we were starting out.

The final web site is currently being designed and built, this current design is temporary where we feel useful to start sharing some common information and answer some questions we see that are raised around commissioning.

About Me

I entered the construction industry in 1995. It was not a grand start – folding drawings and making tea for USD $1.69 an hour at a small plumbing and heating company in the South of England. But it was a start, and it gave me a foundation that no formal qualification can replicate: an understanding of what it actually feels like to be the least experienced person in the room.

The real test came when I moved to Hong Kong in 2013 to take on a commissioning management role, having come from a project management background and zero experience in Commissioning Management. The first 18 months were a baptism by fire. I was responsible for work I had not been formally trained for, in an environment that moved fast and forgave very little. There was no structured resource to turn to, no clear reference point, and no one handing out a roadmap. I had to learn how to learn, and I had to do it quickly. That experience never left me.

I am now a BCxP-certified [ASHRAE] commissioning professional with 30 years of experience across project management and commissioning management in mission critical, commercial, hospitality, and government sectors – working for end users, clients, main contractors, and sub-contractors across the UK, China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Malaysia.

That work has taken me through some of the most demanding project environments in the industry: data centres, client-side work for major financial institutions, and regional programmes spanning multiple countries. It also led me to build constructandcommission.com, which has grown into a widely used commissioning resource for practitioners around the world.

commissioningmanager.com is a different proposition: more focused, more structured, and built specifically around mastering the commissioning process from first principles. The same need, approached differently.
